CDS Application Forms: Formatting the 350x350 Square Documents

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is the premier entry route for graduates looking to join the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy. Because this examination is administered through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) central servers, it utilizes a highly rigid document upload protocol. Submitting a standard rectangular passport photograph will trigger immediate rejection on the portal.

Furthermore, your CDS application photograph is more than just a bureaucratic checkbox. It is the first visual impression you make on the Services Selection Board (SSB) assessors if you successfully clear the written exam. Formatting this document perfectly is crucial for both technical acceptance and professional presentation.

1. The 350x350 Square Pixel Mandate

The UPSC breaks away from almost every other recruitment board in India by demanding perfect geometric squares for both your photograph and your signature. The strict dimensions required are 350 pixels in width by 350 pixels in height.

A common error candidates make is attempting to take a standard 200x230 passport photo and stretching the width to hit 350 pixels. This stretches your facial features horizontally, resulting in a distorted, unnatural image that the biometric scanner will flag. You must first crop your original image into a 1:1 aspect ratio (a perfect square) before resizing it. The final file size must remain between 20 KB and 300 KB. Since a 300 KB upper limit is quite generous, avoid heavily compressing the file; keep the resolution sharp and high-quality.

2. Grooming and Professional Attire

During the SSB psychological tests and personal interviews, assessors actively cross-reference your current physical appearance with the photograph you uploaded months earlier. A massive discrepancy in grooming can raise unnecessary questions.

  • Formal Attire: Do not upload photos wearing t-shirts, hoodies, or casual winter wear. Opt for a formal, light-colored shirt. A tie is optional but highly recommended.
  • Grooming Standards: Maintain a neat, military-acceptable haircut in the photo. If you upload a photo sporting a thick beard and long hair, but arrive at the SSB clean-shaven, it disrupts identity verification. Present yourself exactly how you intend to appear before the military board.
  • Background Clarity: The backdrop must be plain white or a very light, solid color without any distracting shadows or textures.

3. The Square Signature Formatting

Your signature must also conform to the 350x350 pixel square dimension, keeping within the 20 KB to 300 KB range. When signing, use a bold black or dark blue pen on unruled white paper. Sign your name broadly so it fills the center of the square frame. If you write a tiny signature and leave massive borders of white space around it, the ink will become illegible when printed on the attendance sheet. Finally, avoid writing in block capital letters, as this invalidates the handwriting sample.
