Why RRB Applications Get Rejected: The Strict AI Screening Process
The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the largest recruitment drives in the world. Notifications for NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories), ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot), and Technician roles routinely attract millions of applications. Because human reviewers cannot process 10 million forms, the RRB relies heavily on aggressive AI algorithms to filter out non-compliant photographs and signatures.
Every recruitment cycle, hundreds of thousands of candidates receive a rejection status. The heartbreak is severe, especially since the RRB rarely provides a modification window for rejected photos. To ensure your admit card is generated, you must understand exactly what the automated system is looking to flag.
1. The Absolute Ban on Accessories and Spectacles
The single highest cause for RRB photo rejection is the presence of facial accessories. The AI software is trained to map facial landmarks (eyes, nose, mouth). Anything that obstructs these landmarks triggers an automatic failure.
- Caps, Hats, and Cloth: Any headgear that covers the hair or casts a shadow over the forehead is strictly prohibited, unless worn for specific religious reasons (and even then, the full face must be visible).
- The Spectacle Rule: If you wear prescription spectacles, you face a major risk. Even the slightest flash reflection or glare on the glass will cause the AI to register the eyes as "hidden." Additionally, thick frames that cover the eyebrows or cheekbones are flagged. The safest, most foolproof approach is to remove your prescription glasses entirely for the photograph. Dark glasses and tinted lenses are an immediate disqualification.
2. Photograph Specifications and Lighting
The RRB passport photo must be exactly 240x320 pixels, with a file size strictly bounded between 30 KB and 70 KB. This file size is slightly larger than other exams, meaning the RRB expects a clearer, higher-quality image.
The background must be plain white or light-colored. Photos taken against brick walls, curtains, or outdoor scenery will fail the background segmentation check. Furthermore, avoid taking "selfies." Selfies distort the facial perspective due to the wide-angle lenses on front-facing cameras. Have someone else take your photo from at least 3 feet away, keeping the camera exactly at eye level. Ensure the lighting is bright and even across both sides of your face.
3. Signature Specifications
The signature upload must be 140x60 pixels, falling between 30 KB and 49 KB.
The RRB is particularly strict about the readability of the signature. You must sign using a flowing script (running hand) with a black or dark blue ink pen. Block letters or ALL CAPS signatures are universally rejected by the railway board. Ensure that you crop the signature box tightly; if you upload a large white rectangle with a tiny signature in the center, the compression algorithm will render the ink invisible, leading to an "Illegible Signature" rejection.
